C-COM provides 2-way high-speed internet access
OTTAWA, Feb. 5, 2002 /CNW/ - C-COM Satellite Systems Inc. (CDNX: CMI) has
installed the first 2-way high-speed Internet access system for Environment
Canada's Air Quality Research Branch, located in Fraserdale (150Km North of
Timmins, Ontario). The Laboratory is using the C-COM service to conduct
research on the seasonal and annual variations of carbon dioxide uptake in
northern forests and methane emissions from wetland regions near Hudson Bay.
The increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide and methane over the next few
decades are expected to contribute to global climate change.
The Research Laboratory collects and transfers data via remote control.
Up to eight computers are connected to the C-COM delivered network. C-COM was
chosen for its ability to deliver a network-ready product which combines
reliability with high-level technical support and reasonable monthly service
fees. The Research Laboratory will be able to disconnect three to four
telephone lines, which it will no longer need as a result of this installation.
"The Air Quality Research Branch's use of the C-COM-delivered 2-way high-
speed Internet access shows the capabilities and opportunities that exist for
our service. This unique application of Internet use will allow C-COM to
provide similar services to other institutions working in remote locations and
requiring high-speed Internet solutions," said Leslie Klein, President and CEO
of C-COM Satellite System Inc.
"The C-COM solution has allowed us to make our Remote Laboratory
accessible via the Internet for quality control and diagnostic procedures. It
has also provided the convenience of high-speed Internet access for scientists
and technicians visiting the Lab. Timely instrument diagnostics and
troubleshooting equate to higher quality data, and that's our primary purpose
for being there," said Senen Racki, Computer System Administrator at
Environment Canada - M.S.C.
